In the gospels, Jesus is put on the spot to pay the temple tax. He doesn’t try to get out of it. Instead, he instructs Peter to go fishing, and he pulls a coin out of the mouth of a fish with which to pay the tax (Matthew 17.24-27).
By paying the temple tax, Jesus demonstrated to his followers the importance of giving, and also the importance of trusting God to supply that which we will give. Jesus first decided to give, then trusted God to supply. We must do the same. Even the King of Kings gave out of obedience. And he expects us to follow his lead.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding. Proverbs 3.5
